About the Outfitter:

This outfitter has found ways to supply these hunts at an extremely low price by just providing guiding instead of adding an exorbitant rate that most outfitter charge when they include meals and lodging. In addition, his hunt location he supplies access to lower priced motels and local restaurants. The bottom line is we all need a place to stay and night and food to eat. This way you have the choice to bring a camping trailer, tent, or select the motel you wish to use. The same with the meals, you can eat at McDonalds or steak houses, you decide. To even cut his guide costs, he lets you feed him, this is thinking out of the box, to save the hunter as much money as possible.

New Mexico is the Land of Enchantment and a world of mysterious hunt license drawing and no points are used or awarded making draw calculation extremely difficult. It can be the most difficult place for a non-resident unless you pick your battles and plan for them.

New Mexico has about 60,000 elk but with their strict state management of this resource New Mexico can say they take the biggest bulls every year because their herd average age is 4 years older on the average. Quality, not quantity, and the number of hunters in the field each year are limited.

Elk are managed by the state, so it is the draw or a voucher if you are not a resident. This has made New Mexico’s Elk hunts quite high. Add to this the New Mexico Indian reservations that easily bread 360” bulls selling voucher/licenses to the public at the highest dollar in the land. Again, an outfitted hunt is the way to go if you are hunting New Mexico, just to be able to get to hunt.

Elk Hunts

Traditionally December is a prime month as elk migrate on to the ranch for the winter. Herds in the 100 or so range are common during the month. The landowner was branding cattle and saw a herd of 5 bulls, 3 or which were well over 300 points B&C gross.

The area is a prime family owned elk ranch with bulls currently staying on it which is normal. No other bulls have been taken off it since last year.

As always with elk the worse the weather the better the hunting. A storm coming through gets everything moving, where blue bird weather pushes everything in cover and bedded down. The big choice to your hunt about this hunt is not only that you always have a flow of migrants coming down for the winter supplying movement.

Voucher prices are always favored the later in December that you hunt. December is the coldest and the snowiest month to hunt but with weather to stack your odds the later the better. The biggest bulls usually migrate last but with elk you can only use the word usually because migration and elk are never certain enough to use the word always.

Mule Deer Hunts

It has taken this outfitter some years to really find a good mule deer hunt here in New Mexico worth providing on public land. Over the past few years he and his guides have been looking over this area and we can say we were impressed with amount of deer and quality seen on public land.

Antelope Hunts

New Mexico has the most record book entries for pronghorn antelope. The reason is the mild winters and the summer availability to find water. The cattle ranchers have multiple tanks in each of their large fields and the antelope know where they are in case one goes dry. The genes are good and the high plains desert provides the “Short Grasses” that the antelope eat, high protein with little bulk, to go in a small stomach. Long range eyesight works well in the wide open areas that the antelope live in. The landowner manages his antelope population with permission slips that the outfitter buys with access to the ranch. These allow the hunter to buy the license online from the leisure of his home computer right after the hunt is booked.

For private land antelope hunting we have 2 great private ranches, both of which are in great areas for trophy Antelope. We get a total of 9 tags and the ranches are about 10,000 acres each and both hold lots of Antelope. It’s common to see several bucks a day.

White Sands Missile Range and Private land Oryx-Gemsbok Hunts

Please note there are two major types of Oryx. The Scimitar Oryx that is almost all white and popular in Texas, and the one we hunt free ranging in New Mexico the Gemsbok (Hems’ bok from Africa) that is a much better trophy and an extremely beautiful animal with its face bands like a raccoon, a body of various browns, dark main and such. So if you look at pictures of the two Oryx you can see what the Gemsbok type Oryx in Texas is usually over $5000 and the Scimitar is about $3000. In this case you can get a free range Gemsbok for under what you would pay for the lower quality Scimitar Oryx in a Texas high fence hunt.

Our Oryx hunts are conducted on the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) starting on Friday afternoon and ending on Sunday. You will want to put in with us as your outfitter for highest odds of drawing this tag. These are fun hunts and our success rates have been 100% kill success. These animals are beautiful and make exceptional trophies and you do not have to go all the way to Africa to get one. These are spot and stalk hunts and success is generally higher with rifle or muzzle loader than with a bow. But whatever your goal is we will work hard to achieve it. We conduct these hunts from Oct-Feb on different Range. Oryx numbers are down, and these hunts are getting harder so practicing at longer ranges out to 400 yards will yield for better success and practice off shooting sticks in standing position. Tags have been lowered to only 45 tags a hunt so do not go home empty handed with a once in a lifetime tag.

OFF-Range Hunts

We are also now guiding for off range hunts, these hunts can be tough, but we have put the work in to find good areas that produce and have been 100% on these hunts as well. Also, the draw odds are much better so if you are getting tired of not drawing a WSMR tag then let us talk about getting you in on these hunts. We usually run these hunts Nov-Feb, as its much cooler and we can hunt most of the day. We offer 4 day package hunts and if for some reason we do not tag out in that time being that tag is a month long you can come back for just a day rate. These hunts are done from either Las Cruces or Socorro, NM. Some outfitters brag about private land to do these hunts but honestly it’s not needed as we use to have private land and we were more successful on the public side, so we dropped the private and in return it created a more affordable hunt not having to pay an access fee. We prefer to run these hunts as 1x1 but can accommodate up to 2 hunters per guide.

Location:

Elk main camp in unit 34 near Cal Brazos but smaller camps in units 36, 37, 13, 28 and 17; mule deer unit 31 near Clovis; pronghorn antelope unit 16; oryx on White Sands Missile Range and hunts off the range.

Hunt Type(s):

Guided hunts, lodging and meals included varies.

Species & Recommended Seasons:

Elk, mule deer, antelope, oryx.

Licenses:

The disadvantage for a non-resident is the state has a quota of 5% of the licenses.

There is a big advantage in having the outfitter put in for you, it does greatly increase your odds, because he puts it in under his outfitters license which get an added allotment.

We have never had a hunter not draw this deer license, so it works well, knock on wood.

Deer and antelope license can be purchased with a permission letter from the landowner.

Applications for licenses due mid-March. Outfitter helps with the application process.

New Mexico does not have a preference point system so 100% random. Only 5% of licenses allocated to non-residents unless guided.

Vouchers available for elk hunts.

License and Season Information

Lay of the Land:

Where the deer are there are no roads, so it is walking in soft sand all day, which is not for everyone. There is a lot of brush so walking in a straight line can be difficult and it is not 4-wheeler friendly. Terrain is all sand hills so pretty much like walking on a beach all day, most of the hunting is spot and stalk and this is a walking hunt and although there is nothing real steep or mountainous, do expect to cover up to 5 miles or more a day.  Most times we have been out we have seen up to 8 bucks a day.

Bull elk on a private 5000 acres plus ranch. The ranch buts up against a large section of BLM land which also has elk but also public hunters. The elk migrate to this ranch in the fall and winter to meet a large local herd. When the hunters are on the BLM land the elk quickly move to this private ranch and stay there. In addition, there is a large local herd that stays on the ranch.

Party Size:

One or more per group. Elk vouchers 7 max per year. Mule deer 2 to 4 per season. Antelope 4 max. Oryx, bighorn, ibex 1 or 2 per group.

Mode of Travel:

Vehicle and foot.

Success Rate:

100% success on mule deer, antelope and oryx hunts.

Animal Quality

Average mule deer buck in 130-150” class range with a chance at 160-170” and up to 180” taken in past years.  Bull elk sizes range 275” and better but of course how much above 300 must do with your elk hunting skills and of course luck. Antelope record book size. Most antelope average in mid-70's but the area has potential for 80”+.

Our main elk camp is located Unit 34 and we have the nicest lodging setup via cabin lodge here, and we run a smaller camp out of Units 36, 37, 28 and 17. We have had great success the past years with 100% opportunity and 75-80% kill. The elk herd here is great and you will have a great time and see a lot of elk. We offer 3 different kinds of packages to meet any budget and are all inclusive meaning no need to add tax or other costs what you see is what you pay. Archery hunts are exciting with the peak of the rut in full swing, and it almost seems that elk are everywhere filling the beautiful mountains with high pitch bugles. There is also a youth/mobility impaired hunt following the archery hunts and they make for a great exciting hunt, and we usually have great success with these hunts. As for muzzle loader and rifle, it is mostly a spot and stalk type of hunting but there is always that chance of calling in a hot bull looking for that cow. Note these are walking hunts and you can expect to walk 4-8 miles a day, so I advise to start conditioning a couple months before your hunt.
