About the Outfitter:

Welcome to Newfoundland, the highest moose density in the world, in fact more moose than people.

Density doesn’t mean all of Newfoundland has the biggest moose like everything you must get off the beaten path to the locations where the bulls get 7,8, 9 and more years old to find big Newfoundland moose.

Our remote lodge is only for our special guests that want a special hunt, a lodge just for them and their group, a chef for the cooking, and each one of them gets a trained moose hunting guide. Argo’s, ATVs, and boats round out the equipment after the float plane and the helicopter. The way to get Big Newfoundland Moose is like all hunting go where the other hunters can’t easily get. If your moose is going to be your 1 and only moose hunt it is advisable to pay a little more and get into the older moose populations where the moose are not as accessible. Newfoundland has more moose than people and therefor has very few roads. Flying in is the way to get away from the population of hunters and to be where moose concentrate.

It is also our float plane landing and parking area for the fly in hunters to meet their float plane. Depending on your flight time coming in to the Newfoundland Airport (Deer Lake) you may spend an early arrival or a late departure at this lodge which is very comfortable.

Your hot dinner is prepared and served in the lodge that you and your group share with no one else. There are delicious meals and plenty of food an important aspect of any quality hunting experience. Our guest’s enjoyment is number 1 to us just like the other Newfi pleasures you will enjoy on the island. We want you to relax and enjoy a delicious hearty meal after a challenging day of bear hunting, moose hunting or caribou hunting in Newfoundland Canada. Our cooks prepare substantial portions of healthy breakfast, nourishing packed lunch and outstanding main meals. Feast upon satisfying array of regional delicacies including fresh fish, game and tempting homemade desserts. We can adjust any recipe to meet special demands or dietary considerations.

Amenities include, refrigerator, deep freezer, microwave, telephone, television and more.

The lodge also includes a cozy wood fire where we invite you to chat about your thrilling guided hunting adventures. Many guests opt to spend a few nights in one of these comfortable cabins close to the trophy game they seek. All our camps are equipped with radios and radio telephones in case of emergency. We have a helicopter to shuttle and handle any emergencies able to get hunters to the Deer Lake metro area in 30 minutes from the remote lodge.

Typical Order of events.

Arrival at Deer Lake Airport from the US on September 24th,.

The Outfitter will personally pick you up at the airport and drive you 20 minutes on paved highway to the Home lodge/Float Plane parking area. If you think of something you forgot or need to get this is the time to get it. You will also be able to shop on your way back just advise the outfitter of your plans.

Depending on the time of day of your arrival you may stay at the home lodge for a night and fly to the lake lodge in the morning.

Taxing over to the dock you meet your guides as they tie up the plane to the dock and unload the plane.

Plans are made as to which guide with who and what equipment with who and the plans are set as you fall asleep for your first night in another country which is as friendly as being at home.

Morning breakfast is eaten and the guides go different directions. Riding and glassing is the most common way to cover ground and see the most moose.

Departure

On the departure day, you will be flown back to the home lodge. Any moose meat that you have taken has been flown back to the home lodge and given to the meat processor. It can be flown back like frozen luggage and the same with the antlers cut in half in the center of the skull plate. When mounting the taxidermist can pull those back together and with the cape mount the bull for you when you get home.

I recommend freezing the cape as well. It is normally valued at around $ 300 in the US if skinned correctly so it can be used for a US Shiras moose.

Location:

Newfoundland, Canada

Hunt Type(s):

Fully guided.

Species & Recommended Seasons:

Moose, caribou and black bear.

Seasons & Licenses:

August 30 through September 12 is an exclusive bowhunting season while September 13 through October is open to either gun or bow. Since this is a fall hunt there is a good possibility of shooting a bear if you tag out early. In addition, a caribou tag may be available, but since the Woodland Caribou is low in numbers Newfoundland is the only huntable herd any more. The Caribou Grand Slam shooters usually have those tied up for years in advance. The Woodland Caribou is a smaller caribou sub-species. The barren Ground Caribou is much larger and I can easily get you licenses but it would have to be next year.

Lay of the Land:

Moose hunting can be a hunt where you need to cover ground. Because of that the equipment has to be in good condition. Even though you are away from everyone you are still on Newfound Island but in the interior. Most of the main roadways go around the exterior of the island.

On this specially tailored hunt, keeping your group all to your-selves having the complete camp to yourself for lodging, chef, Argos, ATV’s and boats. You will be hunting a lake area, which the lodge is right on the lake and acts as a landing field and a takeoff runway for you float plane. The helicopter when used arrives and departs from an accessible area next to the lodge.

Many hunters hunt closer to the main lodge where there is 4-wheel drive access to moose areas. It is good because our guide is experienced in calling bulls in and know where to locate them. In the fly-in hunts our guides still know what they are doing of course but the big moose are taken on the fly-in hunts. Population of moose and their age has a lot to do with the moose quality in this fly in area.

Our main lodge, the Mountain Lodge, is essentially an elite resort style operation with our main lodge accommodating up to 40 people. Our kitchen facilities are world class with our own in house award winning chef.

Party Size:

One or more per group.

Mode of Travel:

4x4, Argos, ATVs, boat, plane and helicopter.

Success Rate:

High density moose and low pressure hunting combine to yield opportunities that are second to none. The overall success rate for nonresident hunters is far above any other region on the continent!

An Island with 120,000 big game moose - 2 moose for every square mile! Come experience this hunting paradise yourself.

The moose have little hunting pressure and are 7 to 9 or more years old. So you can see why we take such big moose and have a success rate of over 97% for the last 2 years.
